STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY

On Friday, September 17th, St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School participated in the International Stand Up Against Poverty event, joining millions of people from around the world over the weekend who were standing up to challenge world leaders to follow through on the Millennium Development Goals they set in order to alleviate extreme poverty by the year 2015.  The United Nations Millennium Development Summit takes place this weekend in New York City.

The event at St. Joe’s was organized by the school’s Development & Peace “Just” Youth Group and began in the school auditorium with educational media introducing the issues.  Students and staff then proceeded out to the back field to form the letters “Stand UP!”.  Once everyone was in place, they began  one minute of silence in memory of all who have died because of extreme poverty.
