Information on the Specialist High Skills Major

How Will the Specialist High Skills Major Benefit Students?

• A SHSM allows a student to experience a range of customized, career-focused learning opportunities. It enables a student to take courses in an area of interest related to aparticular sector while working towards an OSSD.

• The focused learning experiences of a SHSM program give students the opportunity to explore, identify, and refine career goals and make informed decisions related to postsecondary education, training, and next steps towards a career.

• The experiential learning opportunities provided in a SHSM enable students to refine their skills and improve their work habits, gain confidence in their ability to succeed, and see the connections between their studies, the real world, and their future careers. Students are also able to begin to establish relationships and networks in their chosen fields.

• Students who graduate with a SHSM can look forward to improved prospects after secondary school because of the recognition of and support for the SHSM framework content from a variety of representatives from the economic sector, apprenticeship training programs, colleges, and universities.

COURSES IN TECH

TTI1O- This Grade 9 course gives our students the opportunity to explore six technology/trade settings including Transportation Technology and Welding, Design & Electrical, and Wood Construction. Students rotate through these labs every 6.5 weeks. The course is designed to provide maximum "hands-on". This format allows each student the opportunity to better prepare for future Technology course selections. It is planned to intergrate a Machining unit for September 2007.

TTJ2O- This grade 10 course is Transportation Technology which provides the student the foundation for the Internal Combustion Engine theory of

operation, major components for both the 2 and 4 stroke cycle. This unit also includes cooling, lubrication, and servicing of the engine. Fusion welding, and cutting metal are several labs performed by the students.Student are instructed in the safe operation of lab equipment, servicing vehicles, brake and suspension inspections. Over the twenty week semester students are expected to complete 30 practical labs in a small team environment. Fundamentals delivered in this course better prepare students for Grade 11 Transporation Technology and beyond....

TTJ3C- This grade 11 Transportation Technology course provides a student an opportunity to continue to build upon the fundamentals taught in the TTJ2C course. The major culminating activity in this course deals with disassembly inspection, measurement and re-assembly of multi-cylinder 4 stroke engine.
Students will also be given the opportunity to explore Electric-Arc as well as MIG welding to enhance
their welding skills. Study will include, braking and suspension systems, along with fuel and electrical
troubleshooting.
Students will work in a small team environment in order to complete the 30 practical labs over the 20 week
semester. Students who successfully complete this course will be better prepared for the grade 12 Transportation Technology program.

TTJ4C- This senior automotive technology transportation course is designed to better prepare graduates for apprenticeship or college technician programmes. The course material deals with Electrical /Electronics circuit building and testing. Fuel systems and drivieability issues are also covered in this semester. Students will also receive hands-on instruction using scan tools, digital meters and other speciality lab equipment. The students are expected to complete and submit practical labs over the semester which will also include MIG/TIG welding and Metal Arc. Other topics covered include 4-wheel alignment, power trains including torque converters (lock-up) hydraulic control, applying devices and electronic sensors.
